Excessive moisture levels this year have really given alfalfa plants a boost.

Cattle that consume too much alfalfa can have serious bloating issues that may result in death.

It is a real concern for producers this year as, in some areas, alfalfa plants have overtaken pasture stands.

During a forage tour, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Researcher Alan Iwassa suggested producers evaluate their options. Producers may want to bale the stand or let it mature and graze it later in the flowering stage. This would reduce bloating concerns that can kill the animal.

Although the high alfalfa population may be an issue, Iwassa says it will also be helpful to producers. Having the extra hay around is great, especially when you look back at the last couple of years when producers were struggling to find enough feed.
