The Rosetown RCMP just got a boost in their effort to fight crime. 2 patrol cars of the traffic services integrated unit have been outfitted with Automatic License Plate Readers, with a 3rd set to be installed sometime this week.

In chatting with Corporal Heather Tarzwell, one of the officers on the integrated traffic unit, she says they've almost been working too well, albeit with a little chuckle. Tarzwell says they have been invaluable in saving time, and getting any unregistered vehicles, suspended licenses or other off the roads in West Central Saskatchewan. Where as the RCMP used to be constantly running license plates through their system to see if anything funny popped up, with the automated readers, it is constantly doing that in a 360 degree direction around the patrol car.

Tarzwell noted that it will even pick up unregistered vehicles that are parked, and that way they can check on a vehicle periodically, to see if someone has been driving it

Heather also noted that even though there will be a heightened awareness on trying to keep impaired drivers off the road, they are constantly doing their best to keep impaired drivers off the roads. She also was encouraged that the last time they did a series off check stops in the area, they did not locate one impaired driver, and while that doesn't mean they are not out there, it can be viewed as a positive. Tarzwell also went on to say that she's been apart of the RCMP for 25 years, and she says in her time with the RCMP, there has been a shift in the last few holiday seasons to ensure everybody is doing their part to keep impaired drivers off the roads come holiday time.
