Another successful Saskatchewan High School AA Provincial Track and Field championship wrapped up over the weekend in Saskatoon.

Local student athletes did their best to bring medals back home after earning their spot among the province's best athletes, and one athlete from the Wilkie team ended up as the province's Senior Girls Aggregate Champion.

Battle West District athletes and teams had a good showing. Two local schools finished in the top 50 of the team competition, as the Battle West athlete pool stretches well out of the West Central region north of Highway 16.

McLurg School out of Wilkie topped that list, actually taking home the 2A title for most points. Senior athlete Emma Egert and her Sr. Girls Aggregate Championship performance was a big reason why. Egert finished 2nd in both the Girls 100m and Girls 80m hurdles, and other medals from her day on the running track included a bronze in the 200m and then gold in the 400m.

Outstanding performances from West Central athletes placed them 12th overall in the district standings. West Central Athletics President Lance Morrison shared that out of all the school districts participating, the district featured the second smallest student enrollment.

Morrison wanted to congratulate Rosetown Central High School as the top performers from the District. The RCHS team captured the 3A Gold medal with the most points total out of 3A schools. They were helped out by two individual performances that resulted in gold as Taya Green won the Intermediate Girls Long Jump, and Dami Igbekoyi took home the win in the Intermediate Boys 100 M Hurdles.

The SHSAA recognized the commitment of the hundreds of volunteer coaches who ensured their athletes had a chance to compete during the weekend that featured 1,430 athletes in all from 241 Saskatchewan schools.
