A few communities in the west central region are going to see some intersection safety upgrades courtesy of the latest round of grants from the Provincial Traffic Safety Fund, while one local town already has.

The Town of Biggar was one of the communities to see new signage put up in their community, receiving over $30,000 in the process. The work in Biggar will ensure safety for kids on their way to school, as residents should notice two new pedestrian crosswalks along Main Street. One is at 6th Avenue while the other is at 8th, and in addition, flashing speed signs are now visible upon entry into the school zone on King Street and 8th Avenue West.

Again that was from the first set of funding in 2021, and Biggar was again involved in the most recent announcement, with $53,685 towards "Phase 1 of a Pedestrian Safety Initiative Project".

Leader and Kyle were also among the approved through the most recent grant program, as part of the 98 applications province-wide that were approved for a combined $1.18 million in funds.

"The projects range, there's a lot of different great initiatives that communities will be undertaking as a result of these grants," she said. "Which include speed display signs, playground measures, intersection improvements, and things like pedestrian and roadway signs," said Heather Anderson, a communications consultant with SGI.

The town of Leader received $19,800 headed towards speed reduction initiatives, as their submission included installing speed display and amber flashing beacon signs in the school zone and other high-risk areas. Then just over $8,000 is being dolled out to the town of Kyle for speed management projects, as they will be adding speed display signs to Railway Avenue and other high-risk areas.

The grant program has already begun accepting applications for its next round of funding that's open until March 31, and you can view the full list of local improvement projects chosen during the latest period below:
