Canadians have been called on by Canadian Blood Services to help with blood donations before the upcoming long weekend.

Canadian Blood Services is looking for 32,000 blood donations before Labour Day in order to keep their supply at a "comfortable" level. The request was announced last Friday after CBS determined their national supply had significantly dropped after the summer months.

This summer saw more requests for blood than donations, as the summer months tend to be less busy for Canadians when it comes to blood donations. The other problem has been a decrease in donors over the last few years as well.

CBS is seeking donations of all blood types, but is particularly looking for donations from O-negative blood donors, which is the universal blood donor. There is no donation clinics in Kindersley and Rosetown, with the nearest donation clinics being in North Battleford and Saskatoon. Although, with some residents making the trip to cities over the extended weekend, it may be convenient to take a moment to donate at the local blood donor clinic.

In the meantime, CBS will be attempting to recruit some new donors. Their target number will be 100,000 new donors to help with the blood donations. The majority of donors for blood donations are in the 50 and over category. CBS will be looking to attract younger generations by hosting donor clinics at school campuses in the near future.
