National Teen Driver Safety Week is in full swing throughout the province and the rest of the country.

The week-long event is designed by Parachute, a national charitable organization dedicated to helping prevent injuries and saving lives, to engage teens in learning to eliminate distracted driving and receiving education on road safety.

SGI is even taking part in the annual public awareness campaign, giving Saskatchewan teens a chance of winning prizes by promoting safe driving on social media.

On a national scale, approximately 2,000 Canadians die in motor vehicle collisions annually. In addition, at least 350 deaths are caused by distracted driving in Canada. Recent studies show drivers who use their mobile devices while driving may increase their chances of a collision by up to four times.

The awareness campaign is a wonderful opportunity for young adults aged 15 to 19 to reach out and exhibit good driving behaviours. "I think the more you spread the word on safe driving and getting young people involved in it, the better we have of educating and teaching them how to drive safely," said Meghan Mochoruk of the Kindersley RCMP. "Distracted driving is definitely a major cause of collisions in any part of the province."

Mochoruk mentioned the patterns of unsafe driving behaviours in the area as well. "Specifically in the Kindersley area, distracted driving and aggresive driving, even impaired driving is a factor in some of [the detachment's] files."
