Kinsmen Park in Kindersley will soon be getting upgraded thanks to generous community members.

The Friends of Kinsmen Park (FOKP) group have been working towards a plan to improve the park's appearance and equipment to create a unique experience for families in Kindersley. As part of the group's plan, they have raised $7,000 to date towards renovations to the park.

Committee members Elyse Moss and Tammy Anderson-Jackson spoke to Kindersley town council about the group's aspirations for the park at council meeting on September 26th. Furthermore, Moss and Anderson-Jackson provided an update to councillors of the committee's fundraising efforts to date.

An action plan was presented to council which FOKP hope will come to fruition in the near future. The action plan consists of three upgrades to the recreational space:

  • Phase one (2016): commence renovations on the park's outdoor rink.
  • Phase two (2017): upgrading the shack for the rink's users.
  • Phase three (2017-2018): work begins on the playground and landscaping .

FOKP are hoping work for phase one can begin this autumn. The committee have estimated the total cost for phase one would amount to $15,000 including any possible setbacks. The $7,000 raised by FOKP cuts the total to nearly half, and the majority of labour will be done through in-kind services from local trained specialists.

Moss and Anderson-Jackson's delegation for town council requested the funds already raised be matched by the town in order to proceed with phase one immediately. Acting Mayor Shaun Henry mentioned how the town has set aside $20,000 in their budget towards upgrading playgrounds in the town, and the requested funds would be acquired from the account.

After the presentation, town council commented on their support of the project, and how a resolution will be created for the next council meeting in October.
