A tourism strategy for the Town of Kindersley has completed its first phase to get groups from different sectors to participate and contribute in an effort to attract more people to Kindersley.

In previous years different sectors have worked on their own tourism needs.  The strategy works towards bringing reps from all over Town, together for support and to promote similar common goals.

West Central Online spoke to Michelle McMillan Manager of Culture and Heritage for the Town of Kindersley about the progress so far.

"We started this in the fall of 2015, that involved just looking at how our tourism booth operated in years past, it also involved looking at some of the data, so how many people had traveled through and what we offer as a town for tourism.  Then we reached out to Tourism Saskatchewan and asked some questions about what we can do and what resources they have to assist us in building anything up.   We engaged reps for the Kindersley Chamber of Commerce, and the Hospitality Association."

With the discussion and information a brief strategy was created to outline the medium and long term goals for tourism in Kindersley.  Currently a lot of feedback is needed to get towards further goals, but a Kindersley Culture Plan is now being worked on, with a Tourism plan the next step in the long term goals.

McMillan also explained some other reasons for the strategy.

"There's just a lot of things to do that anyone at any given time can participate in and we really want to attract more people to come and take advantage of that, and to discover even the region around us, there's some really unique regions that are just outside our town borders that are tourism destinations and it would be really great to link a lot of the locations together."

The strategy outlines many benefits for a plan for Tourism including the benefits to local businesses like hotels, parks, restaurants, and more.

Kindersley's current Tourism Booth is located at the Kindersley District Plains Museum office.   The booth operates Monday and Thursday from 9am-6pm, and Friday to Sunday 10am-7pm.
