Some live music and a parade might have you thinking it's an average homecoming celebration taking place this weekend down in Lancer; but endless amounts of jam, jelly, and syrup come Saturday morning via the almighty chokecherry might have you a little more interested in just what's going on in the community south of the river.

Organizer with the Lancer Chokecherry Festival Kellen Murch called into our newsroom earlier this week to share news of their 50th event taking place this weekend that includes a pancake breakfast, mud bogs, and all sorts of opportunities for family fun:

Check out the full schedule of events through their Facebook post above, as Murch shared a little bit more about the Festival.

"Chokecherry Festival is the 50th annual this year, and it's just a homecoming. Longest running homecoming in Saskatchewan I guess, up until COVID hit."

For those wondering just why its named the Chokecherry Festival, a bountiful harvest paired with a special statue helps tell the story.

"We actually are home to the largest chokecherry statue, I guess you'd call it. It's on Main Street."

Every town has their theme for "homecoming", and Chokecherry Festival is no exception as Murch talked about his families involvement with it over the years.

"It is something we've tried to keep it going, and I know my grandfather was a big part of it. Lots of people, grandparents and uncles and aunts. We're trying to keep it going for as long as we can."
