The busyness of Main Street in Kindersley is a positive sight for the local economy. Although, it may be presenting problems when it comes to parking.

A Kindersley resident brought forth this issue at the latest town council meeting on the evening of March 27th. Kathie Elmhurst, from Kindersley Vacuum, presented the second delegation Monday evening based on the parking concerns found around her business and the downtown area.

Elmhurst stated how her customers and other businesses have voiced their displeasure with the lack of parking available near shops on the busy street. She specifically turned council's attention to an old bylaw which used to enforced two hour parking on Main Street from Railway Avenue to 4th Avenue.

"Kindersley needs to extend two hour parking." - Kindersley resident Kathie Elmhurst, requesting council create timed parking for the majority of Main Street.

Now, Elmhurst wants to see council bring back two hour parking for all of Main Street except for 7th Avenue, along with a request for a 20-minute loading zone in front of Kindersley Vacuum. She believes this will assist in eliminating the congestion found for parkers on the street while creating flexible parking options for both customers and staff.

Council responded by asking Emlhurst if the town would be expected to hire additional staff to start monitoring 2 hour parking spots, to which she replied no. Councillor Randy Ervine, who has a business on Main Street, explained how business owners on the strip usually apply an unwritten rule of allowing one parking spot for staff in front or near the establishment. Elmhurst countered by mentioning how business owners have still stated their frustrations to her over the matter, and they want to see growth in the downtown area, but parking remains as a problem.

The suggestion was made by Mayor Rod Perkins and Deputy Mayor Ken Francis for Elmhurst to collect signatures and/or other complaints from business owners and customers to strengthen her plea. Elmhurst finished her delegation by saying she will start a petition and gather signatures to prove there are other in the community who share the same concerns.
