The latest round of grants from the Provincial Traffic Safety Fund were announced last week. The fund, which is covered in part from the proceeds from photo speed enforcement, is for communities to manage speed, improve school zone safety and install pedestrian crosswalks.

In all, 98 applications from 92 communities throughout the province were approved. The grants range from $502 for improving intersection awareness in the RM of Mount Hope, to $53,685 for the first phase of a pedestrian safety initiative in the town of Biggar. The total of the grants is $1,187,133.

"The Provincial Traffic Safety Fund Grant program is incredibly important in funding projects to improve safety on Saskatchewan roads," Minister Responsible for SGI Don Morgan said in a written release. "I'd like to thank all communities for applying, and for the work they do to reduce traffic collisions, injuries and fatalities in our province."

The grants are awarded twice a year. Submissions are evaluated by a committee made up of representatives from the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association, the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities, the Prince Albert Grand Council, the Saskatchewan Association of Chiefs of Police, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Highways and SGI. The grants are awarded twice a year, with the application window for the next round of grants currently open until March 31st.
