The RCMP confirmed on Monday afternoon at a media briefing, that Damien Sanderson – a suspect in a string of stabbings- has been found dead in the James Smith Cree Nation.  

“His body was located outdoors in a heavily grassed area in proximity to a house that was being examined,” says Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore, Commanding Officer of the Saskatchewan RCMP. “We can confirm he has visible injuries. These injuries are not believed to be self-inflicted at this time. The exact cause of death will be determined in conjunction with the Saskatchewan Corners Officer.” 

Damien was wanted for first-degree murder and a number of other charges after a string of stabbings took place in the James Smith Cree Nation and Weldon area on Sunday morning.  

The other suspect in the inter-provincial manhunt is Damien’s brother, Myles Sanderson who has yet to be found and is still at large. Myles is also wanted. 

Blackmore says that Myles may have sustained injuries but could not confirm, and for the public to continue to be on the lookout for him, as he may seek medical attention. 

“Even if he is injured, it does not mean he’s not still dangerous. Myles has a lengthy criminal record involving both persons and property crime. We consider him armed and dangerous do not approach him.” 

Myles Sanderson has been charged with: three counts, first-degree murder, one count, attempted murder, and one count, break and enter – residence. Myles is 6-foot-1, 200 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.   

With Damien’s death, the current deceased count is 11, with 19 injured as a result of the two suspects.  

Prior to Monday afternoon’s announcement, the last location of the suspects was in the Arcola Ave area around 11:45 a.m. on Sunday in Regina, in a black Nissan Rogue with SK license 119 MPI. 

Regina Police Service Chief Evan Bray told the media conference that police still believe Myles Sanderson is in Regina, so the search for him continues.

On Sunday morning, the Melfort RCMP issued a dangerous persons alert after multiple stabbings on James Smith Cree Nation. 

Use caution when allowing others into your residence. DO NOT APPROACH suspicious persons. Do not pick up hitchhikers. Report suspicious persons, emergencies, or info to 9-1-1. 

If new evidence identifies public safety risks, police will let the public know through Saskatchewan's Emergency Public Alerting program and alerts will be broadcast on TV and radio, and through cell phones. They will also update their social media channels and public website.
