November’s traffic safety spotlight, held monthly by SGI, focused on intersection safety and winter driving.

Police reported 709 drivers in Saskatchewan who put themselves at risk by disobeying traffic signals and signs, or any other rules related to an intersection.

SGI stated that 709 intersection violations included:

  • 270 drivers who disobeyed stop signs
  • 196 drivers who failed to obey a traffic light
  • 82 drivers who made a U-turn at traffic-light controlled intersections
  • 161 for other intersections-related Traffic Safety Act violations

In a release, SGI stated that following the rules, and practicing safe driving around intersections is always important, especially when it comes to dealing with reduced traction and visibility that comes along with winter driving.

Police reported additional violations for the month of November:

  • 312 impaired drivers, including 210 who were charged with Criminal Code offences
  • 4,524 tickets for speeding or aggressive driving
  • 206 tickets for seatbelt or passenger restraint infractions
  • 593 tickets for distracted driving (including 516 for using a mobile device while driving)

SGI states that police will continue to be on the lookout throughout the month as the Traffic Safety Spotlight focuses on impaired driving. The Crown Corporation also stated that many drivers will experience the lookout first hand. There will be numerous check stops around the province all month long, and SGI suggests that your stay at a check stop can be a short and easy visit, so long as you plan for a safe ride home before you start drinking.
