Saskatchewan Agriculture’s weekly crop report shows farmers are making some good progress with the harvest.

So far about 26% of the Provincial crop is in the bin, with harvest most advanced in the southwestern region where 49 % of the crop is in, 37% is done in the southeast, 23 % in the west-central region and 14% in the east-central region. The northeastern is at 4% while the northwest has 5% in the bin.

Brent Flaten with Saskatchewan's Ministry of Agriculture says with temperatures hitting into the 30's it's important to cool the grain off in the bin.

"You do want to aerate the grain and cool it down, especially the oil seed crops, as they are very sensitive when it comes to going bad in the bin."

Flaten says that the crop quality is up from last year.

"This year there is a lot less diseased because of the dryer conditions, some quality factors in the southwest are where we are hearing cases of where Durham didn't fill very well so you have light wheat and Durham."

Producers around the province say yields are better than expected considering the lack of rainfall.

Flaten added that the smoke shouldn't have a big impact on the harvest, noting if we get some rain crops won't dry as quick since the smoke tends to keep up the humidity during the day.
