This weekend, Wilkie was gifted with a cheque for $25,000 from Kraft for finishing in the top four of the Kraft Hockeyville contest.

The formal presentation of the cheque was on Sunday at the Saskcan Community Centre, and it was also announced that the NHL Player’s Association (NHLPA) would be donating $10,000 towards equipment for minor hockey in the community. Kraft will also be donating ten thousand pounds of Kraft Heinz products to the Wilkie food bank.

Hockeyville is an annual competition put together by Kraft Heinz, with support from the National Hockey League (NHL), and the NHLPA.

Players, coaches, and community members in Wilkie show an intense bond for anyone who carries a jersey with the name 'Outlaw', and they were given the chance to explain to Kraft why their town should be named 'Hockeyville.'

“Every one of every age in Wilkie plays for, cheers for, cleans the ice for, mans the booth for, volunteers for, or otherwise supports the name on the front of the jersey – worn by everyone from initiation youngsters trying out the game for the first time to the third-decade veterans on the senior team. The name has a proud history of over 100 years – the Wilkie Outlaws!”

Helen Urlacher, a campaign organizer for the 2019 Kraft Hockeyville competition, explained that Wilkie would use the money to help make repairs to their arena, which routinely sees filled and busy stands.

Wilkie’s arena suffered from a devastating fire in late 2015, and while they were able to rebuild within a year’s time, there are still some pieces of the old arena that were undamaged by the fire being used in the new arena that need to be replaced.

Additionally, former North Battleford resident and Dragon’s Den celebrity Brett Wilson is kicking in $25,000 more for upgrades to the rink.

First place in the Kraft Hockeyville Contest was given to Renous, New Brunswick
