With the winter season just about here, people are more likely to spend their days indoors to avoid the cold. Staying inside, combined with Holiday eating, makes it easy to put on some winter weight.

Ron Wolfe is the Exercise Therapist for the Heartland Health Region.

"There's lots of options," Wolfe said many communities often have an indoor space for exercising, even if it's just walking, "In the West Central area there's lots of options, some communities have a walking track, some communities open up their rink lobby for walking, some use their civic centre or community gym."

Even when the cold weather hits, Wolfe said it's still an option to walk outside, "Just wear proper clothing and stay away from the slippery sections."

There are also a few items a person can use to avoid becoming a victim of slippery sidewalks. Walking poles with picked ends can help keep steady. There are also shoes available with grips on the bottom that help grip those icy sections.

Wolfe said people can also embrace the winter season and partake in a number of seasonal activities, "There's also lots of activities like curling, public skating, shinny times or even cross country skiing."

If you plan on spending time outdoors, make sure to layer up your clothes to stay warm and dry.

Wolfe said a person should be active throughout the day, "In a perfect world, you should have 60 minutes a day of activity. And no prolonged sitting for more than two hours straight."

If sitting down for a prolonged length of time, like during a hockey game, TV or even at the office, a person should get up and stretch periodically.
