The Kindersley Klippers had a tough pre-season test this past weekend with a home-and-home series against the defending Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League champion Battlefords North Stars.
Kindersley traveled to the North Battleford Civic Centre for the first of two games on Friday evening. The Klippers took several penalties, but only allowed one goal in the first period, which was the first of many in the series from Layne Young.
Troy Gerein, Young and Owen Lamb all scored second period goals for the North Stars coming off more Kindersley penalties and turnovers.
Nick Malenica scored the Klippers’ only goal by spinning into the slot and going five-hole. Battlefords tough offense paid off with a 7-1 win.
Kindersley played in front of their home crowd at the West Central Events Centre for the first time this preseason on Saturday.
Klippers’ forward Cody Hodgson had a huge game, scoring a hat-trick which proved to be the difference. Jordan Funk and Tanner Thompson also got on the board for Kinderlsey and Justen Close had an excellent game in net.
Young added another two goals for the North Stars with Manegre scoring one.
The home advantage was crucial in the series, as both games went to the home team, with the Klippers coming away with an impressive 6-3 win.
The regular season home opener for the Klippers will also be against the Battlefords on September 15th at 7:30 pm, which will be one of 10 meetings between the rivals this season.
