Rosetown residents will have a number of opportunities to get out on the ice this season. The Rosetown Curling Club started up league games just over a month ago, and are now planning for a few tournaments.

The club has a steady number of curlers this year. Laurie Slocombe, with the Curling Club, said they have a wide variety of curlers, "We have about 30 toonie league curlers out, which is grade four and up, and a number of high school kids who are coming to volunteer and help with that league. In the ladies league, we have six teams registered and the men's league is back to 14."

Slocombe said those numbers are similar to last years.

While the season started over a month ago, Slocombe said the club is always welcoming new faces. "We're always looking for new members and always looking for spares. We would love to have everyone out."

Slocombe said 'the more, the merrier' when it comes to the bonspiels. Anyone looking to get a few games in this season can register for one of the bonspiels. The club has a few smaller bonspiels coming up ahead of their larger Rosebowl tournament.

  • December 16th - Steak-spiel
  • January 19th - 20th - Sterling-spiel
  • January 27th - Open Bonspiel

The bonspiels on December 16th and January 19th are a two person bonspiels. "Basically both people will be a skip, so to speak. There's really no sweeping until hog line in. Each person throws six rocks down, the opposition throws their six. Then they would start the next end and there's only six ends." Slocombe said it's a fairly quick going game, "One game takes roughly an hour, maybe just over or sometimes less. It's really quick and it's a lot of fun."

The 2018 Rosebowl will be starting on March 22nd and running until the 25th. Slocombe said this year's tournament will be slightly condensed to help accommodate the Allan Cup Hockey tournament, "We only have our arena ice... So we are only taking 32 teams for the bonspiel this year, that's all we can get in for those four days."

The Rosebowl will only have 32 men's teams competing this year. "And I know those spots are filling up fast."
