After successful bouts against teams like Drumheller, Prince Albert and Weyburn last season, the Kindersley Roller Derby Association is ready for another action packed season.

Saturday marks the home opener for both the junior squad (the Ruff Necks) and the Kindersley Crude Hitters.  The Ruff Necks will hit the track, otherwise known as the Kindersley Curling Rink, at 5:00 pm.  The Crude Hitters will follow with a special Black & White Invitational.  Britenie "Black Betty" Georget told us what the invitational will include.

"It will be a mix and match of different teams.  There was a team from Moose Jaw that wanted to come down, but they've got a lot of rookies on their team.  So we thought it would be a really good opportunity to open it up to everybody. That way it gives the chance for rookies to learn from the vets, for people to play in different positions they don't normally get to play in and just a way to get some extra time to play in."

Georget also spoke about how beneficial the invitational will be to the team.

"You learn a lot more when you skate with people you're not used to.  You learn in a hurry what your strengths and weaknesses are, where you can improve and what you do really well.  So it's a really good opportunity for everyone to learn."

Roller derby is one of the fastest growing sports in Saskatchewan and features two opposing players called jammers, who attempt to get through a pack of skaters called blockers.  The first jammer through the pack on the first lap, can then collect points based on the amount of skaters she passes on the second lap.  Roller derby has been around since the 1930's but has really seen a resurgence over the past decade in North America.

If you'd like to learn more about the game and get involved with roller derby, the KRDA is looking for volunteers, especially non-skating officials.
