High School golfers put on a clinic to kick off the playoff season at Districts recently.
30 total golfers from the Sun West School Division came to compete at the Outlook Riverview Golf Course on September 11th to determine who would advance to the Provincial Championships.
Kindersley Composite School's team dominated the Boys competition and will represent the West Central Region at Provincials. KCS brought a young team to Districts in 2018, and proved very quickly that age is just a number.
Cort Tunall is just in Grade 9 and managed to post the best score out of all 30 golfers at the competition. Tunall and his teammates including Kyler Cote (Grade 12), Ryder Dionne (Grade 10), and Colby Kozicky (Grade 9) all performed well when it mattered most and will have a chance to compete on the provincial level.
Dave Luukkonen, Head Coach of the Golf Program at KCS, talks about the tough competition that was on display at Districts at the Outlook Riverview Golf Course.
"It's always a really good tournament. Typically, there are several schools in our area that place a good team to compete at this event. Tournaments are the great equalizer, you never know which team is going to rise to the top," Luukkonen explained.
The four golfers from KCS will now get a chance to compete at Provincials against some of the best high school golfers the province has to offer. Luukkonen has some experience with coaching at Provincials and knows it will be a great experience for his players no matter what result comes out of it.
"It's always tough at Provincials. Teams like Estevan and Swift Current always seem to bring really good golfers to Provincials, as well as multiple other schools. It's a really good event for the kids as it's a two-day tournament with the best of the best playing one another, and I know our players are looking forward to it."
Provincials will be held on September 21st & 22nd at the North Battleford Golf & Country Club.
