Team Sommerfeld are putting their best sliders forward this curling season and competing for a spot at provincials.

The team is composed of Lead Lian Wood and Second Taylor Wenzel from Rosetown, Third Kennedy Pederson of Outlook, and Skip Kelsey Sommerfeld from Allan. The four are competing in the Junior Women's division.

Sommerfeld said the team is vying for provincials this year, "One of our goals this year is to qualify for provincials. We're going to try to make it as far as we can but there's some pretty stiff competition. Our biggest goal right now is to qualify."

To qualify, a team must be one of the top four teams at a Q-Spiel Tournament. Unfortunately, Sommerfeld's Rink lost out of the first tournament of this year.

Q-Spiel #1 Results

  • Draw 1: Team Erickson 10 - Team Sommerfeld 7
  • Draw 2: Team Fahl 10 - Team Sommerfeld 7
  • Draw 3: Team Taylor 5 - Team Sommerfeld 11
  • Draw 4: Team Erickson 13 - Team Sommerfeld 2

Although it wasn't the turnout the team was hoping for, Sommerfeld said they still learnt a lot throughout the weekend, "There was a lot of really good advice from the older people we're playing, because it's U21 and we're all 16. They had some really good advice. We got a lot of nice compliments from other teams, saying we're doing good for where we're at and keep working at it because it doesn't come overnight. And I completely agree with them."

Sommerfeld said they will be taking their new experiences and knowledge to the next Q-Spiel Tournament, which will be November 16th to the 18th in Saskatoon.

There will be a total of three qualifying tournaments for the team to try their hand at.

Sommerfeld said this season is also special because they're dedicating the sport to the Gasper Family of Rosetown.  She noted they just wanted to pay their respect in any way possible, "They were just a great family. I don't have a personal connection but from what I've been told, they were an amazing family. It's heartbreaking. We wanted to do something to give back to the community because of all the great things they did for the family. They did a lot for us to help get us started with the sponsorship, so we thought we'd repay it and curl in their honour."

The Gasper Family were victims to a car crash this past summer.

Team Sutherland also spent some time on the ice this past weekend, competing in the Junior Men's Divison Q-Spiel.

The team is composed of Cody Sutherland of Rosetown, Jack Reid of North Battleford, and Bruce Krepps and Doug Sroka of Maidstone.

Q-Spiel #1 Results

  • Draw 1: Team Bernath 9 - Team Sutherland 7
  • Draw 2: Team Dmyterko 8 - Team Sutherland 7
  • Draw 3: Team Baumgartner 4 - Team Sutherland 8
  • Draw 4: Team Lautsch 2 - Team Sutherland 8
  • Draw 5: Team Lloyd 9 - Team Sutherland 7

Despite some great competition, Sutherland and his rink fell short and were unable to qualify. Their next Q-Spiel is November 16th to the 18th in Saskatoon.

The Junior Men's Division is similiar to the Women's, with three Q-Spiels for curling teams to qualify at. The top four teams advance to provincials.
