The beginning of a new year also means it's award season no matter where you look. Whether it's in entertainment or sports, people are receiving recognition for their hard work over the last several months.

Following the completion of their first round playoff matchups, the Sask Valley Hockey League released their list of award winners for the 2018-2019 season.

Kyle Elks forward Jesse Shynkaruk is this year's Most Valuable Player Award recipient after leading all players with 81 points in 17 games. He tallied the league's most goals at 45 while collecting 36 assists to help provide a large amount of offence for the Elks.

His teammate Brett Boehm was noticed not only for his great play on the ice this season, but for his sportsmanship too. Boehm takes home this year's Gentlemanly with Ability Award, finishing with a league-best 38 assists while putting up the second-most league points at 63.

Despite the Lucky Lake Lakers exiting out of the SVHL playoffs earlier than they would have liked, one of their first year forwards was given praise for his inaugural senior campaign. Josh Anderson takes this year's Top Rookie Award after providing 51 points in 18 games this winter for the Lakers, good enough for fifth in league scoring.

Daryl Souster is the winner of the Coach of the Year Award. He helped guide the Delisle Bruins to the second best record in the league at 15-3-0-0. The Bruins were the only team to defeat the Elks (17-1-0-0) this season.

The SVHL also released their first and second all-star teams featuring some of the best players over the last few months. Shynkaruk and Boehm join teammates Cory Hodgins and Byron Sorenson on the first team with Ice Hawks forward Shay Stephenson and Blizzards netminder Brett Lewchuk.
