Team Saskatchewan got off to a slow start at the WHL Cup in Calgary last week but finished strong coming out on top in the tournament. Team Saskatchewan lost their first two games against BC on Wednesday and Alberta Thursday to sit at 0-2 to start the tournament. Then on Friday they lost to Team Manitoba 4-3 and their record dropped to 0-3. However things changed after that and the team played the undefeated 3-0 Alberta team on Saturday winning 5-3 to move on to the final on Sunday.

Rosetown’s Vaughn Watterodt had a good tournament for Team Saskatchewan putting up 5 points in the 5 games including a goal and an assist against Team Alberta on Saturday. His steady play continued in the championship game as he added a goal in the 4-2 victory over Team Manitoba as Saskatchewan claimed the tournament. Watterodt hopes to bring the success of his tournament back to the Battlefords Stars midget AAA team where he has recorded 4 points in 9 games.

Rosetown native Jakin Lawrence, who plays for the Swift Current Legionnaires and has put up 3 points in 11 games, was at the WHL Cup as well and recorded 1 goal and 2 assists in the 5 games he played for Team Saskatchewan.

Carter Cormier, who played for the West Central Wheat Kings Bantam AA team in 2017-18, was on the team as well after being drafted by the Regina Pats in the fifth round (91st overall) of the WHL draft in May. Cormier is playing for the Notre Dame Hounds in the Midget AAA Hockey League this season where he has 2 points in 5 games so far.
