Unity’s senior girls basketball team broke a 32-year streak and took home some hardware at this year’s Provincial Championships, Hoopla.

The team led by coach and Unity Composite High School’s Principal, Aaron Melnyk, took home the bronze medal, the senior girls hadn’t taken home a medal of any denomination since 1987.

“We were coming off a loss to Lumsden in the round before but the girls regrouped and had a great showing against Melville in the bronze medal game,” said Melnyk.

The girls had a slight lead going into half-time and Melnyk said they had a motivating talk in the locker room and came out stronger than ever in the third quarter.

“There were a couple girls who got the momentum going putting up points early in the third, but it really was a team effort, everyone came together and were able to get a 15 or so point lead that they carried into the fourth and hung on for the win,” said Melnyk.

The senior girls took the win over Melville with a final score of 61 to 44.

In addition, the senior boys also brought home silver medals for their showing at Hoopla 2019. The senior boys team hadn’t brought home a provincial medal in quite a few years either, this time, breaking a streak of approximately 13 years.

This was also the very first time that both the senior boys and senior girls competed together at the same Provincial Championship.

Coach Melnyk said he couldn’t be more proud of his team and sent well wishes to those graduating this year with optimism for another stand-out team for the 2019-2020 school year.
