A new shack at the Kinsmen Park is on the way for Kindersley and will be a vast improvement to the one that is currently there as it looks to serve a number of functions.

Audrey Hebert, CAO for the Town of Kindersley, shared what will all be included in the new shack.

“There will be of course wheelchair accessible washrooms in there, a mechanical room, an open area for kids to put their skates on etc., then there’s a storage area to store equipment – such as the Zamboni machine that use for the ice – and then also, there will be a concession in there to be used for park events or other things.”

Hebert also said they would also consider the possibility of renting out the shack for private events, although none have been brought up to them, she said they would consider it.

Heartgold Homes Inc. out of Regina was awarded the building contract after the Town completed their Request for Proposal (RFP) process. Hebert said the way the procurement policy works does not allow them to take into consideration any details outside of their initial tender document for the build, including whether the builder is local or not.

Hebert said at the time the tender document was put out, we were in a much different situation in regards to COVID-19 and a local builder was not a stipulation within the document, therefore they were not able to favour those companies who may have been more local. However, she did say, given the turn of events in the last eight weeks, it would have likely been something they may have included if they knew what lied ahead.

The project is now underway with demolition of the old shack currently taking place. Construction of the new shack is expected to start in June, with completion slated for the end of September. The specific cost of the project is not available, however, Hebert said within their tender document they did stipulate up to $165,000 and the estimated cost does fall within those parameters.
