Nearly four months after it was announced that Rosetown was going to be the hometown of the new Junior A team with the GMHL West, all signs point to a crumbling promise with many unanswered questions.

The start of the season for the GMHL West was slated for October 4, of which, Derek Prue, expansion director for GMHL West, stated due to the ice not being ready in Rosetown, they were postponing their start, however, assured the team was on track.

The ice and season start wasn’t the only hiccup that raised questions of the validity of the team and whether or not they were in fact going to call Rosetown home. An early shuffle in coaching staff, along with no actual evidence of the team having a full roster, created several opportunities for doubt.

As of October 4, Prue stated the team would be in Rosetown and they were looking forward to getting the team on the ice. However, the ice time that was initially requested by the Junior A team, has not yet been confirmed with the Town of Rosetown.

Since that time, West Central Online has made numerous attempts to get in touch with Prue for a follow up on the team, no comment has been made by Prue at this time.

GMHL president, Bob Russell, said he hadn’t been made aware of any final decisions regarding the Rosetown Junior A Red Wings, but according to the last update from Prue, it was still a hopeful feat.

Approximately a week ago, Brian Noad, head coach for the Slave Lake Icedogs, also a part of the GMHL West, stated he had heard the Red Wings were moving. He stated the GMHL West currently had “three-and-a-half teams”, which would include, Slave Lake, Northern Alberta, Edmonton and the question of the Rosetown team.

Noad also explained that the GMHL West schedule was only complete up until this past weekend as they were waiting for confirmation on the fourth team. The three active teams already have upwards of seven games under their belt so far this season and Noad said the fourth team will likely have to play three games a week through November to catch up, however these details are yet to be determined.

Speculations that the team was not going to be based out of Rosetown and had shifted to a different community gained traction late last week. A post was made on Facebook, announcing an information night for the High Prairie Junior A Red Wings, with Prue included in the photo.

Still, Prue or any representative from the GMHL or GMHL West, has not officially stated Rosetown will not be the hometown of the Junior A team, yet with the recent evidence, it would appear that very well may be the case.
