As a new year roles in, so does another tax season. This can sometimes seem like an overwhelming and daunting task, especially if it's your first time filing. Here at West Central we want to help make this process as simple as possible.

Here's what you need to know for your 2019 tax season:

  • This year you can begin filing your taxes as early as February 18
  • All personal taxes are to be done by April 30 or if you are self employed by June 17
  • When filing taxes you will need your T4 income slip from your employer, anything you are planning to claim as deductions (child care receipts, medical expenses), or if your self employed home office expenses, travel expenses and any other cost attached to your company/business.
  • This year you can claim the carbon tax rebate on your tax return.
  • For personal taxes you will typically see your return in 2-3 weeks, as where with more complex tax claims can take closer to a month.
  • If you owe money on your taxes, that payment is due April 30. You can always contact the CRA to set up payment arrangements if necessary.

When filing your taxes there are two ways of doing so. The first being online, which has become the most common way Canadians file or by taking them to an accountant of your choice. Regardless of what method you choose, the above information is the same.
