The Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association recently released a blog post in relation to their theme in June being Recreation and Parks Month. Recreation & Parks Month welcomes summer and the great outdoor activities that go along with it, and the Town of Kerrobert was featured for their towns efforts to stay active and connected this summer.

Yes, some activities will look a little different due to COVID-19, but everyone is working hard to make sure that this summer is full of fun, including the town staff, the Recreation Board, Kerrobert Communities in Bloom, the Kerrobert Park Committee and many others." stated author Andrew Exelby in his opening remarks on the blog post.

He started by highlighting some of the socially distant activities the town has already adapted, as fishing and golfing has been opened for the year. The town reservoir was recently stocked with Rainbow Trout.

Kerrobert's Recreation Director Bobbi Hebron would like to remind us that those are not the only available activities, as socially distant activities do not have to take away social interactions.

“While some recreational options have been temporarily lost, being friendly to our neighbors and getting into our yards or gardens for that good energy from the warm sun is still a great way to spend the day!” said Hebron.

The Kerrobert Nature Trail and the Fairgrounds are home to many different birds and other wildlife, and these paths serve as great walking and hiking excursions for its goers. Kerrobert has some fantastic green spaces, as well as some other creative places around town. The towns annual summer program will continue, and its projects are being made COVID friendly. Towns have already committed to different parades and window decorating to spread cheer from afar. A "Kerrobert Rocks" mural will be painted on a local rock garden.

Kerrobert members of Communities in Bloom are working with town staff, and volunteers to make sure the towns mentioned beautiful green space, remains in prime shape. The Communities in Bloom members were forced to be creative in the planting of their flowers this year to ensure social distance standards were met.

The town is going to continue with hiring summer workers, and it is hoped that recreation facilities will be ready to go when the time comes.

“We are very excited to provide extra services to our community through these employment opportunities,” says Bobbi. “Staff that would normally have been working in our recreational facilities, such as the swimming pool, will be ready if we can open up and until then they are helping in other areas to make Kerrobert shine!”

The way to stay connected has mainly been through social media, and information about recreational opportunities is posted regularly on the Town of Kerrobert Culture and Recreation Facebook Page and weekly Community Updates from the Recreation Director are making sure that everyone knows what’s going on. Encouraging messages are being given to town residents through local leaders and volunteers. These messages being just another example of a reminder to stay active, and have fun.
