The provincial government continues to support anti-impaired driving initiatives by providing funding to a key ally. The Ministry of Corrections and Policing and partners announced that they will be providing $25,000 in funding to MADD Canada to help combat impaired driving across the province.

Although the instances of impaired driving has lessened over the years it is a problem that still plagues the province with SGI reporting 39 deaths in 2017. In a previous interview, Joe Hargrave, Minister Responsible for SGI, said that the education surrounding impaired driving needs to be repetitive to elicit a change in the residents of Saskatchewan, as for many years it was considered okay and even the norm to drive while, or after having a few drinks.

The government said they recognize the positive work that MADD Canada is doing and their $25,000 in funding will go towards educating students and teachers about the dangers of impaired driving. This programming will also provide students and teachers with strategies they can use to promote safe choices among their family and peers.

The government paired up with MADD Canada in the summer, along side SGI, SLGA, RCMP, municipal police and stakeholders from the private sector and hospitality industry on the #howareyougettinghome campaign. Michelle Okere, MADD Canada regional manager, said they had a great response from the campaign, especially in rural communities where they noticed a significant uptake on social media.

MADD Canada strives to educate the young and also those who have been above the legal drinking age for many years, about the consequences of impaired driving and suggesting alternative solutions.
