The Rosetown Legion held a “Poppy & Tea” event last weekend, to help raise money for local veterans.

While this event has been going on for several years, This year has seen a drastic increase in guest turnout simply by switching to the morning, rather than holding the event in the afternoon.

Legion Member Tanya Abbot expressed her gratitude to the people for making their way to the legion for the tea, despite the less than ideal weather.

“This year was actually a very good turnout, considering the weather. The numbers increased from last year, so I don’t know if the miserable weather contributed to that, whether people wanted to get up and out of their house considering this nasty weather, but we really appreciate everybody coming out considering what’s happening outside, and their generosity.”

Open from 10 am until noon, the Legion wasn’t just serving tea, but also a delightful snack in the form of cinnamon buns, which were served up with help from the local Girl Guides.

Kathy Tucker, who was in charge of the kitchen at the event, said that they had prepared right around 100 cinnamon buns, and was also excited about the larger turnout.

Tucker also shared what she enjoys the most about the Poppy & Tea event.

“It’s for an excellent cause, because all the money we raise, we keep it locally, and it goes to helping out the vets here in town. When I see people come and donate, it makes me happy because then we can offer services and stuff that they, on a pension, otherwise can’t afford.”

The Rosetown Legion was able to raise several hundred dollars for local veterans, and are planning to hold the Poppy & Tea event in the mornings from now on, due to this year’s increased turnout.
