Residents in the Rosetown area have seen an increase in property crime in recent days. There have been numerous reports of individuals rooting through and stealing from vehicles all around town.

Sergeant Waldner with the Rosetown RCMP detachment reported, “We’ve had one or more individuals going through Rosetown checking multiple vehicles for open doors so they can steal items for a quick pawn or to make a quick dollar.”

Waldner added that in almost every case reported, doors of the vehicles have been left unlocked or keys have been left inside the vehicle. He said that people’s number one priority should be locking up vehicles and ensuring that their property is secured.

“We are trying to reiterate the message [to] lock up, people mostly will not break a window because that will cause noise and attraction; if your doors are locked up, they’re going to keep going because there might be someone down the road who didn’t lock their doors.”

Residents are urged to call the RCMP if they see anything suspicious or have been victim to property crime themselves-even in cases where nothing appears to have gone missing.

“The more information we get with these, the better. We are asking people-definitely call when something has happened, even if nothing is stolen because we want to get as much information as possible.”

Waldner shared that they do have leads that they are following up on and will be continuing in their investigation.

In the meantime, Waldner encourages residents to be diligent. He advises locking vehicles, keeping our eyes and ears open, watching out for our neighbours or friends property who may be away and calling in any suspect activity.
