Last weekend, the Rosetown Catholic Church was busy collecting clothing donations for the Catholic Women’s League Clothing Drive.

Every year, the CWL collects as many pieces of clothing as possible, and sells them out of the Friendship Inn in Saskatoon to those who need them for a minimal amount for the less fortunate to come and purchase. If one is unable to afford any of the clothes, they can be given the clothes for free.

The proceeds from the drive are then given to various charities and organizations, such as St. Paul’s Hospital. Charity proceeds commonly add up to around $100,000 per year.

Additionally, the CWL doesn’t just collect clothes. They also take in common household items such as small kitchen items, sports equipment, jewellery, towels, shoes, and much more.

While support for the drive has been dropping in the past few years, the CWL is still able to nearly fill large vehicles with clothing, using a 3-ton truck in previous years, and a farm trailer this year.

While they don’t collect as many clothes as they used to, CWL President Armilla Rollheiser says that the support they do receive speaks volumes about those in the community who are able to make do with giving away a few shirts.

“Very generous, always very supportive. People do ask and inquire about our clothing drive each year, if we’re having it they usually try to save their things.”

This year, the amount of clothes they were able to collect was enough to fill 10 cubic metres, and that’s still without counting the number of simple household items that also filled the trailer.
