Back in March, a “Free Little Library” appeared just outside of the Rust & Re’Styled in Rosetown, and it was the work of two high school students that put it there.

Students Ella Mysko and Brylee Jefferies decided to set up the library for credit in their Leadership 20 class. It was their final project, and after a bit of searching, they decided that the library looked like a fun project, and was a good way to give back to the community.

However, while the library may not be too big, it still came with a few challenges to get it set up, as the girls explained.

“It took us a long time to get it organized, because we had two people from our school build it for us, and it just took them a little while because they also had to do other projects. So fitting it in was kind of difficult, but they managed.”

The two classmates who built the library itself were Braeden Ashmore, and John Kelpay.

The intention of the Free Little Libraries are to share books with the community. To that end, passersby are encouraged to take a book at no charge, and if they wish, leave a book behind for other’s to discover.

Beyond that though, the appearance of the box can be whatever the builders wish it to be. That’s another thing the girls took into account when setting theirs up.

“We put a plexiglass door on the front, so you can look into it and actually see the books inside. We got the blueprints online, but a lot of the little libraries are different, and you can add certain things, so we wanted to put the door in so you could see inside, because a lot of designs don’t. It’s just a piece of wood so you don’t know what’s inside.”

The girls then explained their project to the owner of Rust & Re’Styled, who was more than happy to set it up outside her shop.
