Shona Braun is a local animal lover whose passion is helping the helpless. The busy farmer and mom, who lends her time to the Canine Action Project, is also involved with Prairie Pooches Rescue.

Prairie Pooches Rescue is a non-profit, foster based animal rescue dedicated to helping animals in need. The mission of Prairie Pooches Rescue is to rescue and re-home animals that are at risk for euthanasia and to reduce pet over-population by educating the public and ensuring that 100% of their rescues are spayed or neutered.

Not only does Braun foster animals herself; currently in her care are a two month old and a two week old puppy-who requires bottle feeding, she has also taken a big role in the fundraising that is so necessary in keeping the organization running.

Braun explained that she helps Prairie Pooches hold online charity auctions. New and gently used items are collected throughout the year to be put up for bidding in auctions ran through Facebook.

“We used to just do one auction a year, but it is getting very popular and our area is expanding-there’s lot’s of support, so now we do two; one in the spring and one in the fall,” said Braun.

The latest auction had 200 items up for grabs and raised an impressive $7,100. Monies raised will go towards puppy food and costs for spaying and neutering or any other vet care that the rescues might require.

“There are so many calls daily, and this allows me to ease some of the workload,” shared Braun of her efforts, who adds, “It’s very rewarding.”

Braun mentioned that Prairie Pooches Rescue is always looking for auction items, kennels and old towels and bedding. Prairie Pooches is a registered charity.
