It was a big weekend of ball for the Biggar Nationals. The girls U16 B softball team came home from Regina on Sunday with a provincial banner in hand.

The team, coached by Dion Harrabek, is made up of thirteen girls. The girls are mostly from the Biggar area, with three girls travelling from North Battleford, and one player travelling from each Beechy, Eston, Conquest and Fiske. Adam Lawson, Chad Leschinski and Tessa L’Hoir make up the rest of the coaching staff.

The weekend began with a few heartbreaking losses and a game delay due to rain on Saturday. Sundays schedule started with playing the second, rained out half of Saturdays game, where the girls saw another defeat, by Unity.

Sydney Leschinski, who spent most of the weekend at centre field, has been playing ball for the past eleven years. She reported that the girls would have to win all of the remaining three games Sunday if they wanted to take the title.

“We sort of fell apart in the round robin and took two losses in the beginning, but then our team got together and decided if we were going to win it, we had to work hard.” shared Leschinski.
The Nationals faced Unity again in the final and defeated them in a nail-biter of a game, winning by just one run.

Mom, Nevada Leschinski, reported that the girls have a few exhibition games to keep them busy until the August long weekend when Biggar is hosting the U16 Western Canadian Softball Championships.

Westerns will see teams from British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba as well as Saskatchewan in attendance.
