Great Plains College is adding a new February 2027 intake for its Electrician program as demand for skilled trades training remains strong.

The full-time, 18-week applied certificate program provides entry-level training for students looking to begin a career in the electrical trade.

“At Great Plains College, we strive to offer programs that respond to the needs of our communities and provide students with skills they need to enter the workforce,” said interim president and CEO Keleah Ostrander.

“Skilled trades are an important part of our regional workforce, and providing opportunities for students to gain hands-on, industry-relevant training is an important part of meeting that need.”

Classroom and shop training

Students in the program can expect to spend approximately 60 per cent of their time in the classroom and 40 per cent in the shop.

Training covers electrical installations and maintenance according to industry standards, along with electrical theory, circuit analysis, wiring methods, safety, tools and fasteners.

Courses also include mathematics for basic electrical principles, single-dwelling plans, lighting and services, essential job skills and an introduction to Indigenous studies.

The program is credited through Saskatchewan Polytechnic.

Demand leads to additional intake

Great Plains College says its current fall electrician cohort is full, prompting the college to add another intake beginning in February.

“Student demand for trades programming is healthy with a full electrical cohort in progress this fall,” Ostrander said.

“We are pleased to be able to respond to both student and industry demand through announcing this additional electrical intake.”

A separate September 2027 intake is also planned.

Apprenticeship credit may be available

Graduates may be eligible for up to 300 hours of trade time as well as academic credit toward Level 1 Apprenticeship.

To qualify, graduates must meet minimum grade requirements, find employment in the trade and register as apprentices with the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission within the required timeline.

Electricians can work in residential or commercial construction, building maintenance, manufacturing, mining, retail and wholesale operations or become self-employed.

Entrance requirements

Applicants require Grade 11 and one of several accepted Grade 11-level mathematics courses, including Foundations of Mathematics 20, Workplace and Apprenticeship Mathematics 20 or Pre-Calculus 20.

Previous Saskatchewan Math 20 or General Math 30 are also accepted.

Applicants must also meet the college’s English-language requirements. Great Plains College says special admission options may be available for applicants who do not meet the standard entrance requirements.

Applications now open

Approximate tuition for the program is $4,374.

Applications for the February 2027 intake are now open, with spaces filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

The college is encouraging interested students to apply early.
