Get out your hats, sunscreen, fans and anything to keep you cool over the next few days as the west central region is about to get quite hot.

Today we are expected to push the mercury into the 30’s with the humidex making if feel closer to 38, making heat exhaustion a very real possibility. Those who are working outside should be prepared with extra water and take breaks in cool environments when needed. Additionally, temperatures inside vehicles can feel several degrees warmer than what is felt outside, therefore, pets and children should not be left inside vehicles for any period of time without sufficient air conditioning.

Also, dog owners should be cautious about walking their four-legged friends as the pavement, when exposed to high temperatures, can easily create blisters or burn your dogs paws.

Eric Dykes, meteorologist with Environment Canada, said warm weather from Alberta will push through the region today, with a chance of rain, which could produce severe thunderstorms, however, it may actually be too hot for that to happen.

“We are going to see rather warm temperatures ushered in with a low pressure system, with that comes an elevated chance of rain – which could turn into severe thunderstorms, but – the problem is, because of the heat, it may inhibit some of them developing, it’s just simply too hot believe it or not,” explained Dykes.

However, we may see more of a chance of rain or thunderstorms into Thursday as another low pressure system is trailing right behind the one we are to experience today.

Although the chance of rain is variable, today and tomorrows temperatures are not. It is going to be very hot and residents are being strongly urged to take the necessary measures to keep themselves, and their pets, cool and hydrated.

Friday could bring with it more rain and thunderstorms before it clears just in time for the weekend, with Dykes stating the west central region should experience a warm, but manageable weekend.
