The twice-a-year "free fishing weekend" in Saskatchewan is a great way for residents to get their fishing fix in for the year without committing to a license. The lack of need for a license is the only freebie, however, as anyone casting a rod this weekend will still need to follow other rules and regulations.

Catch limits are a big one. The province has limits in place on how many fish you can keep, how many of the species you are keeping, and specific to size as well.

"Limit refers to the maximum number and size of fish you are allowed to retain or have in your possession. Anglers may possess no more than one limit of each fish species at any time." states the Ministry of Environment online page for angling. "This includes fish that are eaten or given away for that particular day, as well as all fish that are at your camp, being transported by or for you, or fish that are in storage."

If you are fishing for perch, be like Ash and catch 'em all with a limit of 25. Find the rest of the list pictured below:

The Ministry of Environment shared a reminder on this topic prior to the weekend, coming after anglers on the other side of the province were given a tough reminder.

During two weekends in May, compliance checks at the Regina Beach pier on Last Mountain Lake resulted in fifteen charges and 35 walleye being seized. Conducting checks on 168 anglers, the list included both limit and size violation for walleye, a case where someone was using more than one line in open waters, and for being more than 25 meters from a fishing line.

If you can remember those rules, you will be on the right track to an uninterrupted weekend of fishing. Help out the provinces fishing scene for years to come by "knowing your limit, and staying within it".
