Eligibility on veteran license plates has been expanded, now allowing for Royal Canadian Mounted Police members in Saskatchewan to receive one of the specialty plates.

Members of the RCMP who have served a minimum of three years are eligible to apply for the license plate.

Don Morgan, minister responsible for SGI and MLA for Saskatoon Southeast, said that he believes it is a terrific way to acknowledge the officers of Saskatchewan.

“I think it's a wonderful way for as a province for us to say thank you to our police officers,” he said.

Morgan added that they began considering expanding the veteran license plates to RCMP members when they saw other provinces take the leap.

“We learned that the other provinces were doing it through the Legion,” he stated. “The Legion had the application forms for both military veterans as well as our RCMP veterans, and they were willing to take it on here. So, that's the process that we've adopted, so it made it really easy for us to do it.”

There is no cost for a veteran plate, however the cost to register the vehicle and personalized slogans still applies.

Morgan said that approximately 2,200 regular veterans have applied for the veteran plate and expects a similar number regarding current or former RCMP officers applying for and receiving specialty plates.

Those who are eligible can apply by submitting an application as well as relevant documents to The Legion. From there, The Legion will confirm the applicant’s veteran status and forward the approved application to SGI.

Once approved, the plate will be sent in the mail. Upon receiving the plate, the customer needs to visit or call their motor license issuer to have the plate registered to their vehicle.

Veteran license plates were first introduced in 2004 and are also available to veterans who served in the Canadian Armed Forces, as NATO or UN Peacekeepers or served during World War II or the Korean War as a member of the Canadian Forces, Allied Forces in the Merchant Navy or Ferry Command.

Applications became available May 1, 2022.
