Heading to Swift Current, for the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games, is Rosetown’s Allie Gawryluik. The Summer Games will take place between August 9-18. Gawryluik will be hitting the mats as part of Team Saskatchewan’s women's wrestling team.

The grade ten student is one of over 1,700 athletes, coaches, officials and staff from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Yukon and Nunavut that will be attending the competition.

Gawryluik, who has been wrestling for the past nine years, has been spending her mornings preparing for the Summer Games with her regular season coach, Russell Fersch. Fersch, who coached both Gawryluik girls after their move to Rosetown about a year ago, has high hopes for Gawryluik at the Summer Games.

“Allie is always striving for excellence in her technique,” said Coach Fersch, adding, “She should be the most dynamic and skilled wrestler in her weight class.”

Fersch also calls Gawryluik ‘extremely coach-able.’

This is not the first multi-sport games the athlete has attended. Gawryluik attended both the 2016 Summer Games for soccer and the 2018 Winter Games for wrestling.

“I’m actually really excited and not too nervous about going because I’ve been to multi-sport games and know what to expect,” claimed Gawryluik.

Gawryluik says a wrestling highlight for her was wrestling provincials in grade nine where she captured gold in the female 73 kilogram category. It was her first provincial appearance.

Gawryluik, who will be accompanied by a coach out of Regina for the games, said her goal heading into the competition was to be in the top two.

The women’s wrestling roster also shows representation from the West Central area with athletes coming from Wilkie and Outlook.
