The August long weekend is finally here! But, during the weekend it is important to stay safe.

Be wary of fatalities that may occur on the road, in a boat, or by the sun.

Long weekends tend to have more traffic on the highways, and it is important to keep safe on the road. Remember, an increase in traffic comes an increase in traffic related injuries.

Tyler McMurchy, Media Relations Manager with SGI, shared some important information on how to make it safely to your destination, "If people are heading out for the long weekend they need to know that there will be more traffic and with more traffic comes an increased risk of being in a collision that could potentially injure or kill somebody. There are four basic rules, slow down, obey the posted speed limits, buckle up, avoid distractions, and of course always drive sober and drug free."

Remember to plan ahead when leaving for the long weekend; leave early and expect to have delays.

Accidents don't only happen in cars, boating has caused many of the water related fatalities that occur in Saskatchewan.

Not only is it important to stay safe on the highway, but vacationers at the lake are reminded that many water related fatalities occur on a boat.

In the Saskatchewan Drowning Report for 2017, alcohol consumption continues to be the highest cause for water related fatalities when it comes to boating. Not wearing a life jacket when relevant is another major cause for fatalities.

With high weather temperatures expected all weekend, it is also important to keep safe under the sun. It is often forgot about what harm the sun will cause.

Prevention is the best defence against sunburns and the risks that come with them. Wearing sunscreen is crucial for protection against the sun, and should be applied every two hours. It is also important to stay in the shade and wear clothing such as hats to protect your skin from the sun.

Stay safe and have a happy long weekend!
