Driving under the influence remains a hot topic in Saskatchewan as the numbers show the province suffers from some of the highest incidents in the country.

But, the government is working to make a significant decrease in the statistics.

Saskatchewan Government Insurance and law enforcement in the province have been teaming up for the SGI Spotlights throughout the year. In October, the spotlight was set on impaired driving in the province.

335 drivers were caught driving under the influence during the province-wide focus on impaired driving in October.

21 offenders were caught having a blood alcohol content (BAC) between .04 to .08, and 314 Criminal Code charges were handed out for impaired driving, a BAC over .08, or refusing to take a breathalyzer test.

Additional tickets were handed out for the following incidents:

  • 3,208 speeding tickets
  • 289 tickets for distracted driving with 180 for using a cellular device while driving.
  • 260 tickets for inappropriate driving behaviours or wearing no seatbelt/child safety seat.

The focus will remain on impaired driving in November for SGI and law enforcement in Saskatchewan.
