The hot days of summer in recent weeks have kept household air conditioners in Kindersley and across the province running at full capacity. The energy used to keep our homes cool in the summer-time can be costly on our power bills.

Air Conditioner Units across the prairie's have been working overtime recently

Tolanda Baker with Luk Plumbing and Heating in Kindersley says one of the keys to keeping your house cool is temperature consistency. Baker says, for those who have central air in their homes, instead of cranking down the heat when you get home on a hot day as a retro-active measure, try to keep your thermostat at a consistent temperature just like you would in the winter. This will help keep your house constantly cool during hot spells. Another piece of advice from Baker is to ensure that your unit is being frequently serviced, this will include cleaning and or replacement of filters, bearing and fan replacement, and lubrication on blower motors. The same fan that blows hot air in the winter on a central air system is the one that blows the cool air in the summer, so it is important that all of the mechanisms are functioning properly.

Baker has come up with ten do's and don'ts for efficient air-conditioner usage.

One of her other pointers, do not run humidifiers unless medically necessary in the summer, because humidifiers put water into the air, part of an air conditioning unit's operation is to take water molecules out of the air. So if both machines are running the humidifier renders the air conditioner ineffectual by canceling out any net cooling effect that may have been gained.
