A certain buzz was alive in Eston on Saturday night at the Community Complex.
Residents from Eston and visiting communities gathered in the curling rink portion of the building for an unforgettable night to celebrate the facility's 25th anniversary. The entertainment was highlighted by the appearance of former MLB player Roberto Alomar and TSN sportscaster Natasha Staniszewski as the special guests.
Even though the evening was busy with attendees socializing and bidding for auction items, the event was an opportunity to recognize the hard work which was needed to realize a community dream.
Staniszewski helped co-host the spectacle with Councillor Pat Toner as they introduced people to the stage. Local leaders made speeches during the dinner to commemorate the countless residents who contributed to the construction of the complex and recreation programs in the town. Mayor Al Heron and councillor for the Rural Municipality of Snipe Lake Neil Johnston opened the speeches by welcoming the crowd to Eston.
Residents Cliff Olorenshaw and Carl Hanson gave a touching history on the fundraising and planning process for the facility. Both were members of the original fundraising group which helped collect funds for the complex. Toner delivered a short speech on behalf of resident Wayne Sinclair on the community over the last several years, and Rob Myers gave closing remarks and thanks to important community members.
Once the speeches were finished, Toner introduced Roberto Alomar to a standing ovation from the audience. Alomar participated in a question and answer session with Staniszewski covering everything from winning the World Series with the Blue Jays to being inducted in the Hall of Fame.
