The sheets of ice at the Kindersley Curling Rink may be gone for the summer. But, it doesn't mean there isn't people gliding along the surface in the facility.
Saturday evening marked the return of the Kindersley Crude Hitters roller derby squad in a home victory against the visiting Drumheller Badlands Hell Raisers. After a high-energy affair between the two teams, the Crude Hitters grabbed a 241-139 win in front of the community supporters.
The bout gave the fans and the team an opportunity to see what's in store for the rest of the 2017 season. Britenie "Black Betty" Georget, a jammer for the Crude Hitters, is very impressed with the team's performance in their first game of the year.
"We were all really nervous heading into the first game," said Georget. "It was really good, everybody worked really hard."
In attendance at the match was Bradley Lime Foote, an expert in the sport of roller derby who helps coach players and teams in North America. The Edmonton, Alberta resident offered to help coach the Crude Hitters after he spent time with the team during a camp. "He's like a world-renowned coach, and he's very well known and knows what he's doing," said Georget. "It keeps all of us really, really calm actually."
Now with the first game out of the way, the Crude Hitters will be looking to recover and work hard in their practices leading up to a road match-up versus the Prince Albert Outlaws. Georget explained how the first bout was "a good stepping stone" as they look forward to the rest of their schedule.
"There is always stuff to work on," she explained. "The first game you always learn where you are really strong and where you need a little bit of work."
