On September 26th, Elrose was able to take part in 2019’s Saskatchewan Culture Days.

Culture Days raises the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities.

Elrose played host to presenters from all across the world, with some guests coming from as far as Holland, China, and Australia. These guests, as well as representatives from Canada’s various First Nations, helped make the goal of Culture day more clear. Brenda Fredrickson, one of the coordinators behind Culture Day in Elrose, explains.

“It celebrates the individual things. For example, it might celebrate that we all cook differently, but it also celebrates that we have so much in common; we have the human experience in common. So gathering together to celebrate all of our individual cultures, as well as to simply celebrate being Canadian, in all that means, is a great opportunity.”

Culture Day also saw some international cuisine come to Elrose. Several of the guests who hailed from other countries taught locals how to cook iconic dishes like spring rolls, enchiladas, and a special dish from South Africa.

As Fredrickson explains, this event was made much easier thanks to some outside help.

“We were very fortunate. In February, the Elrose Community Engagement group applied for a grant from Sask Culture, in order to fund bringing in speakers, as well as financing the food, and that’s how we were able to create this event without having a cost for anyone to attend, which was one of our goals. We wanted everybody, with the whole family, to be able to attend all parts of the day for no cost.”

Around 40 people were in attendance for the presentations from the international guests, while approximately 150 people participated in the Taste of Elrose.
