After winning #TheStudentProject earlier this year, Eaton School students are using their prize money to showcase their school culture while learning valuable life skills in the process.

Through a collective school decision, a portion of the winnings has been put towards breathing new life into the schools lobby as the grade 10-12 students paint murals to represent the school culture for years to come.

The 28 high school students have seen the project through it’s entirety, from the numerous hours of planning that started in September, all the way to the final unveiling in a couple weeks. The students committed to meeting for 50 minutes every six days to accomplish their goals in the time frame they set out.

Nichole Bredy, Eaton School teacher, shared how the project aligns through their mentorship program which aims at teaching students practical life skills that will further add to their success after graduating. The program is expansive including all 130 students from kindergarten to grade 12, “It is about teaching skills that will help the students outside of school, whether it is executive function, character, perception, we teach and develop those skills here that have real world application,” said Bredy about the program.

A total of five murals are being created, some stretching as far as 18 feet. Bredy stated that not only has it been a learning experience for all involved, it’s really about emboding the Eaton School Spartan culture and being proud of it. In addition to the murals, students have painted quotes along the hallways and collaborated with the rest of the school for feedback on what it means to them to be a Spartan for their inspiration.

Graduates this year and in the years to come will be able to literally leave their mark in the school as a tree has been painted in one of the rooms where graduates will have the opportunity to leave a fingerprint behind, adding to the tree year after year.

After months of hard work, the students, staff, community members and the superintendent from the school division, will gather as their culmination of effort will be unveiled on December 7, 2018.
