Local MP's don't seem to be a fan of the federal government's decision to invoke the Emergencies Act yesterday.

The move said to help curb border blockades and mass protests popping up across Canada will give the government increased power over a multitude of potential actions.

Jeremy Patzer, the Cypress Hills-Grasslands MP, said instead of triggering the Emergencies Act to clear border crossings, he would have rather seen amendments to Bill C-3 made - which he believes would have done the job.

"The borders are critical infrastructure," he said. "We need to see some certainty around these critical pieces of infrastructure that keep our economy going... We need to have some protections around them. But to go with the Emergencies Act option... Just shows where the mentality of this government is."

After question period yesterday, the Official Opposition put forth a motion calling on the federal government to make changes to COVID-19 mandates by the end of February but that was defeated 185-151.

"The problem we see here is the prime minister has basically created this situation," he said. "They haven't even bothered to check in on if they can amend it a little bit to create some more wiggle room. He's choosing to go more with an option that's just going to inflame the situation and divide Canadians even more than they already are."
