Kindersley's RCMP detachment are receiving some recognition from the international community.

They have been selected as one of three finalists for the Connected Cops award for civilian excellence from LAwS Communication. Kindersley were chosen as an international finalist based on their work in social media with policing.

Jeff Co. Sheriff Department, from the United States, and members from the RCMP youth division in Ottawa are the other nominees. The winner for the award will be announced at the Social Media the Internet and Law Enforcement (SMILE) conference set from April 3rd to 5th in Long Beach, California.

The news has taken the detachment by surprise and has them excited for what's to come. "This is a global award and any police service across the entire world can be nominated for the award," said Meghan Mochoruk, member of the Kindersley RCMP. "We managed to snipe a top three spot so that's pretty awesome."

The process for the nomination was very in-depth and detailed for nominees. A number of posts from social media need to be included, along with proof to demonstrate why the group or administration should be nominated.

Mochoruk actually found out the news back in August 2016. But, after extensive research on the nod, she realized they were one of the finalists from all the applications worldwide. "I didn't actually think we'd get chosen, but we did so it's exciting."

She believes the recognition will not only help place Kindersley on the global map, but it is a positive message when it comes to helping connect law enforcement and the public using social media. While the detachment enjoys adding comedic and creative flavours to their posts, they appreciate its effectiveness with informing and educating the public. "It's super useful, important, and I'm glad we can have fun while we do it too."
