The local Kindersley RCMP detachment is warning local businesses about counterfeit money that has been spotted in the area. The local detachment has received a number of calls over the past week from local businesses. The counterfeit currency in circulation is both Canadian and American bills.

Kindersley Staff Sergeant Kevin Peterson says if local merchants and residents take just an extra moment to look at bills they're receiving, it could save everyone from a big headache.

"With these particular bills, if you look at the hologram area. If you're not paying attention you're going miss it, but these ones have some obvious markings on them and you'll be able to tell this is not real money. I understand things can be busy at the counters, but just take the extra time to check. Make sure you don't get burned, because once you have them you have to give them to us and we need to start an investigation."

Many of these bills have identifying marks to indicate they are fake:

  • Different material is used and easily damaged or ripped;
  • Bills differed in size, shape, and colour;
  • Modified bills with tape or other adhesive materials;
  • Contain holographic images and numbers that do not match the bill denomination

"We just want to get this alert out to business owners to take the extra time and not get burned," Peterson added. "Call us right away if you see any, we'll come right away to assist with dealing with it. Obviously though don't put yourself in harms way. If it will turn into an issue, as a business you have the right to refuse to do business. We'll be there as soon as we can."

If you come into contact with counterfeit currency you're asked to report it to your local RCMP.
